Begin by digging a trench wider than the block you are using.
Follow the table below to determine trench depth and thickness of the
sub-base. Be sure to bury at least an inch of block for every foot
in height.

Compact and level your footing material. If you are building on
unlevel areas, prepare step downs in increments of your block height.
Place the first layer of block on the prepared foundation. Use
a carpenter's level in all directions and use a string line to verify
straightness (or make gentle curves so that you don't have to be as
exact). Be certain the base course is level and the blocks lay
flat. Keep some sand handy to use small handfuls to level the
first course.
Be prepared to backfill the wall with a clean rock that will
let water drain through to the drain tile behind your wall.
Stagger the layers of wall for interlocking wall strength.
