Do-It-Yourself Retaining Wall Installation Guide

 Installing Retaining Walls

Begin by digging a trench wider than the block you are using.   Follow the table below to determine trench depth and thickness of the sub-base.  Be sure to bury at least an inch of block for every foot in height.

Compact and level your footing material.  If you are building on unlevel areas, prepare step downs in increments of your block height.

Place the first layer of block on the prepared foundation.  Use a carpenter's level in all directions and use a string line to verify straightness (or make gentle curves so that you don't have to be as exact).  Be certain the base course is level and the blocks lay flat.  Keep some sand handy to use small handfuls to level the first course.

Be prepared to backfill  the wall with a clean rock that will let water drain through to the drain tile behind your wall.

Stagger the layers of wall for interlocking wall strength.

Note :  Walls above 3' require grid.  Learn more about grid. >>>
