Basic Design Considerations

Dream It, Do It

There are many great design opportunities, they just need to be recognized.

Quick Finds: Retaining Walls | Tumbled Products | Wetcast Products | Pavers | Edgers

Retaining Wall Design Tips:

Are straight retaining walls easier than curved retaining walls?

It can be difficult making a straight retaining wall straight as it has to be carefully installed along a string line; where as, a curved wall can be adapted easily and is softer on the eye.  Curved retaining walls are more difficult to cap if you prefer not to have the gap in the back when the angle of curve is not exactly the angle of the cap and would require cutting the cap with a saw blade.

What are the advantages to terracing a retaining wall?

Terracing a retaining wall creates a space for planting which softens the area and adds visual interest.  Be sure to build the top terrace back about 2x the height of the lower wall.

Paver Design Tips:

Are pavers stronger than patio slabs?

Pavers have a very high psi and can be driven on.  We carry industrial pavers for applications with heavy industrial traffic as well.

Is it alright to mix some tumbled pavers in with the traditional styles?

Some of the best designs have a combination of styles and colors.  Mix in a border or patches of pavers to interrupt a large driveway/patio.

Edger Design Tips:

How do I get a more defined edge around my planting beds?

Instead of using a typical edger, bury a pyzique, antique pyzique, castle wall, or another block that has a deep dimension.  These blocks buried will help minimize lawn trimming and define your planting beds
